Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams

Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of DreamsGandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been called “the hillbilly Pink Floyd,” which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Incredible String Band, Neil Young, The Band, Dylan, and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well.

A British journalist called the music of Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams “a contagious brand of quirky Americana — equal parts Washington Irving and Woodstock, the band taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems.” The New York Times says of the band: “Gandalf Murphy’s repertory is filled with lively songs that are imbued with mystical stirrings and idealism suggestive of the 1960s.” The band’s charismatic live performances and whimsical blend of folk, rock, hillbilly and pop have simply captivated audiences and critics alike. Their dance tent and main stage performances at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival are legendary. Their latest CD, The Grand Slambovians, has been described as “warm, rich, well-crafted and sensitively arranged music that you can easily embrace.” Manically melodic, the bold, new songs knit into the band’s classics like an old paisley quilt wrapped around a very large family.

In 1998 Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams emerged from the misty hills of Sleepy Hollow, New York and exploded upon the Hudson Valley music scene with their stunning self-produced debut release, A Good Thief Tips His Hat. Other recorded efforts include their double CD package, Flapjacks from the Sky and The Great Unravel. Gandalf Murphy consists of Joziah Longo, who provides vocals and plays guitar, harmonica, jaw harp; Sharkey McEwen, who plays guitar, mandolin, and provides background vocals; Tink Lloyd, who plays accordion, cello, ukulele, flute, theremin and sings background vocals; and Tony Zuzulo on percussion and drums.
