How to interpret this stuff:
The info in parentheses under "Browser Info" is what's important.
MSIE = Microsoft Internet Explorer
Example: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)
This is Internet Explorer version 5.5 running under Windows 98 (or Me).
"Mozilla" + number = Netscape Navigator
Example: Mozilla/4.7 [en] (Win98; I)
This is Netscape Navigator version 4.7 running under Windows 98.
Confusingly, browsers identify themselves as some flavor of "Mozilla," but this doesn't necessarily mean they're a Netscape browser.
- AOL users will be running some version of Explorer. The browser ID line will look something like this:
- Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; AOL 6.0; Windows 95)
- This reads: Mozilla class browser, version 4-compatible, Internet Explorer version 5.5 built into AOL version 6 running under Windows 95.
If you see another browser such as Opera or iCab, chances are you installed it yourself ;-).
What to do now
If you have a version 5.x browser or up, you're all set. If you have a 4.x version or below (especially of Netscape), please read the information on this page and consider upgrading (you may want to read it anyway). AOL users running a recent version of their software are fine; less current AOL users may want to upgrade. Note that you'll have better results if you use a separate browser once you connect to the Net through AOL.
