The music played by Maine’s Turkey Hollow is easy to listen to but hard to pin down. It could be classified as country-folk, but then again, it might be bluegrass with tinges of blues, country and even rock thrown in for good measure.
Father and son Tom and Dave Rowe, along with long-time friend Denny Breau, are the heart and soul of Turkey Hollow. They have been performing together as a trio for about four years. Before the formation of this musical unit, Tom and Dave were a duo called Rowe by Rowe. Tom says of playing with his son, “Getting to actually spend this kind of intensive time with one of my children is a gift that I can’t really describe fully. I wish everyone could enjoy this kind of experience.” Tom’s name is recognizable to many as the bass player for the popular band Schooner Fare. Over the past 25 years, Schooner Fare has been known for their traditional music as well as songs on contemporary and topical themes, country ballads and maritime masterpieces.
Turkey Hollow’s latest CD, “Live Turkey,” includes many original songs as well as Denny’s popular Chet Atkins medley. The trio perform on guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass, piano, and tin whistles in tight three-part harmonies. Their extremely varied repertoire, outstanding musicianship and relaxed and witty performing style create a totally enjoyable show for all ages.
