 Oct. 12, 2001 Holly Near

Keep in mind, the women of my generation are still working, not in a retro way, but investigating new ideas, new sounds, from a place of maturity. That is a different place than from the perspective of the young warrior. It was wonderful to be young. I'm finding that it is also wonderful to be aging. I like the way my voice has developed a warm woody sound that was unavailable to me in my youth. I have more power in my lungs. I love that I am calm and detached in a way I did not even want to be in my youth. I like listening to the sounds coming from my peers. We are still delightfully fearless.   Holly Near, in an interview on gay.com

Not many folk singers can claim to have appeared on TV shows like "All in the Family," "Mod Squad," and "The Partridge Family." Nor can they claim Broadway credits, such as Holly's in "Hair." But Near is not only a performer: in 1972 she founded Redwood Records, a major force in alternative music for the next two decades, dedicated to recording and promoting music by politically conscious artists from around the world.
It's not hard to understand why this entertainer, teacher, songwriter, activist and producer has been winner of The Legends of Women's Music Award and recognized as Ms. Magazine's Woman of the Year. Near has devoted much of her career to promoting lesbian and feminist music and has received many awards for her work for social change — all of which is reflected in her art, as she crafts her concerts into a finely-tuned integration of world consciousness, spirituality, and theater spanning a wide range of genres.
Near is well known for her collaborations with such musical greats as Ronnie Gilbert, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bonnie Raitt, and Mercedes Sosa. She has recorded 20 albums and has appeared as a guest on many others. Her latest CD (on her Calico Tracks Music label) is "Edge." In addition, she has written an autobiography, Fire in the Rain: Singer in the Storm as well as a children's book, "The Great Peace March."
Touring worldwide, Holly Near is an ambassador for peace, inviting the audience to become its best self. Join us for a revelation!
Change of plan: There will be one show, starting at 8:00 p.m. All tickets for the previously scheduled 7:00 and 9:00 pm shows will be honored at this performance. Come early for the best seats!
