March 15, 2002 Alastair Moock

Moock’s strength as a musician lies in his powerful, raspy vocals and his well-crafted lyrics. His songs are at once biting, accessible, and tuneful; often funny, always resonant. His musical style is all over the map, drawing from folk (Give Me Love, Don’t Let Her Strength Make Me Weak), blues (Me and My Friend, I’ve Seen Your Mother Naked In the Tub), country (What if Love Came Too Soon, Walking to the End of the World), rock and even jazz (Dance in the Night). Steeped in tradition, yet distinctly contemporary, Alastair manages to produce a sound and presentation that is both familiar and wholly original.    Matthew Smith, FolkWeb Music Director

It’s been said that Alastair Moock and Pastures of Plenty put on “the hippest hootenannies in town.” In a varying but always creative lineup, Moock and his singer-songwriter friends jam together on traditional American music. The result is soulful and fun and extraordinarily energizing. Moock has been making music in the Boston area since 1995 and has played to sold-out crowds on all the main stages in the region.
Scott Alarik wrote in the Boston Globe: “The first thing you notice is the voice. It sounds older than the still-boyish face from which it comes, a weathered, whiskey voice full of fine gravel, smoke, and soft leather.” At 28, Moock has already recorded three CDs; the latest is “A Life I Never Had,” which includes Moock originals and covers by folk heroes Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Rodgers and John Prine. The songs span a wide range of styles, from blues to bluegrass to folk ballad to beat poetry. The CD has been described as “an aural feast, richly melodic, set to a propulsive groove, brimming with eloquent riffs and evocative moments.”
Moock has a definite presence on stage and makes his audiences feel at home with his wonderful anecdotes and repartee. His sense of humor stands out, as well as his sense of history and tradition. Come see a great group of young original traditionalists combine the best of roots music with their own contemporary style.
