Guy Van Duser and Billy Novick have a musical telepathy honed by more than twenty-five years of playing together. Their music is based around Guy’s innovative finger-style guitar wizardry and his uncanny ability to play bass lines, chords and melodies all at the same time. With his daring imagination, breathtaking technique, and wonderful musicality, Guy has become an inspiration for guitarists all over the world. Billy’s soulful, ever-inventive clarinet playing provides the ideal complement to Guy’s guitar. With his vast knowledge of tunes from the classic jazz era, dazzling improvising skills, and entertaining vocals, Novick is able to add both a melodic and dynamic spark to Guy’s guitar, so their music sounds fresh and original while still showing its roots. The duo can take any piece from their huge repertoire — an obscure Ellington tune, a Gershwin classic, a complex Jelly Roll Morton arrangement — and immediately make it their own. If you’re really lucky, you may get to hear Guy’s solo guitar version of “Stars and Stripes Forever” or Billy’s pennywhistle rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue.” Nothing is off-limits to these guys.
Guy and Billy have performed in concerts, clubs and festivals all over North America and Europe. You may have heard them on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion show or All Things Considered, or on countless film and television soundtracks. When you add a relaxed and engaging stage manner to all their other talents, you know you’ve got a treat in store. And don’t forget — tonight’s concert is being recorded for a live CD! Come see Guy and Billy and find out why they call it “swing.”
